Chennai City in and around tourist places


THE CHENNAI THEOSOPHICAL SOCIETY
(Timings: 8 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 5 pm – Monday to Friday, Saturday half-day, and Sunday holiday) formed in 1857 by Madam Blavatsky and her co-worker col. Olcott in the USA in 1886. It was decided to shift the head – quarters of the society to its’ present location in Adyar. The headquarters building is a splendid old mansion surrounded by gardens on the estuary of the river Adyar.

CHENNAI MAHALAKSHMI TEMPLE
Located at Besant Nagar, Elliot’s Beach. It is dedicated to eight Lakshmi’s, a beautiful specimen of modern temple. It attracts large number of devotees.

CHENNAI KALASHETRA
Devoted to reviving the classical arts, the ‘Temple of Art’. It was founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale in 1936, Kalakshetra, today, has students from many countries with the students and their gurus (teachers) living in the same campus in the ancient Indian tradition of the gurukulam where education is inseparable from other experience.

CHENNAI ELLIOT’S BEACH
Located near Besant Nagar. An alternative to the Marina for beach lovers as to avoid crowds and howkers.

CHENNAI SNAKE PARK
Located in Guindy adjacent to the children’s park, has a variety of reptiles ranging from snakes to monitor lizards and turtles. King Cobras, Banded Kraits, Puff Adders, Vipers Pythons, Crocodiles and Gaint Turtles and some of the species that can be seen here. Demonstrations are held every hour. (Timings 8.30 am to 5.30 pm).

CHENNAI CHILDREN’S PARK
Situated in guindy. It has a small collection of animals and birds. The main attractions in this park are the elephant and pony rides, which are available on Saturdays and Sundays. Besides this, there is also a playground with swings, slides and seesaws, which will delight any child. (Timings 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, Tuesday holiday).

CHENNAI GANDHIJI, RAJAJI AND KAMARAY MEMORIALS
Memorials to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi the first Governor General Rajagopalachari and K. Kamaraj, the great stalwart form the south who in the vanguard of India’s freedom movement were outstanding patriots and nation builders.

CHENNAI PLANETORIUM & PERIYAR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Programme Timings 10.45 am, 01,15 pm and 3.45 pm - English (12.00 Noon & 2.00 pm - Tamil)
Located at Kottur in Chennai, Housed and modern fully computerized projector which deoics the heavens on a hemispherical dome. The planetarium presents to the visiting public and students audio-visuals programmes on various themes on science and Technology. Science and technology central attract children and students.

CHENNAI VALLUVAR KOTTAM
Situated in Nungambakkam. It is a memorial to poet – saint Thiruvalluvar who wrote the sacred book “Thirukkural”. Highly valued for its ethical content and purest expression of human thought. A life size statue of Thiruvalluvar is seen in the shmine. (Timings. 9am to 7.30pm)

CHENNAI GOVERNMENT MUSEUM
Undoubtedly one of the country’s best Museum. Established in 1857. It has section devoted to geology, archaeology, anthropology, mumismtics, botany, zoology, and sculpture. There is a good collection of arms and armour and several other specimens.

CHENNAI NATIONAL ART GALLERY
Situated in Egmore. It is housed in a building built in 1906 in the Indo-saracenic style of architecture. The building itself is a work of art and was originally intended to be the Victoria memorial and Technical Institute. But is was made the National Art Gallery in 1951. (Timings: 8am to 5pm, closed on Fridays and National holidays)

CHENNAI ANNA ZOOLOGY PART VANDALUR

It is the largest in South Asia and has a rich variety of different species of animals, reptiles and birds. Mini safaris are organized here.

CHENNAI BIRD SANCTTUARY VEDANTAHNGAL

It is also called Silvan Woods Forest, which attracts over a lakh bird’s species annually especially during the monsoon period. Here is also a watchtower for the ardent bird watches.

CHENNAI AMUSEMENT PARK KISHKINTHA

Navodaya Mass Entertainments Ltd. opened this first theme amusement park in chennai. Situated near Tambaram and spread over 100 acres, this part offers exciting rides and other attractions.

CHENNAI LORD PERUMAL TEMPLE SRIPERUMBUDUR

Firstly it is the birthplace of Vaishnavite Saint Ramanujar; Ancient temples of Lord Siva and Lord Perumal are situated here.

The 27acre children amusement part has wide attractions. Which included Parachute Town, Private Boat, Striking Boat and 110 feet ‘Dizee Shake’ and different kinds of children entertainment programmes.

It has a nice Beach, which is the best place for Fishing and Swimming. Many popular as luxury beach resort; this beach has a fort built by the Nawab of carnatic. There is a darga and an ancient church here.

CHENNAI CROCODILE BANK
On the Mahabalipuram Road, there is a Crocodile Bank with more than hundred Crocodiles. This crocodile breeding and research center has many species of Indian and African crocodiles and alligators. The various sizes of crocodiles from the newly hatched ones of fully matures crocodiles can be observed here.

CHENNAI MAHABALIPURAM
It is also known as Mamallapuram Emperior Mahendravarman Pallava built this ancient seaport in the seventh century. The places of Interest here include Arjuna’s Penance, Krishna Mandapa, Mahishasura Mardhini Cave, Pancha Rathas, Shore Temple and Varsha Mandapa.

CHENNAI KANCHEEPURAM

It is an important place for Pilgrims. Kancheepuram has number of temples, each one unique in it’s own way. A visit to this city during the car festival or the Garudothsavam will prove to he the good introduction into the rich and colorful pageantry of Hinduism.

CHENNAI TIRUPATHI – THIRUMALA

Tirupati is a small town situated the foothills of the Tirumala hill in Chittor District (Andhra Pradesh). Originally called Vengadam, tirumala has Vaishnava Temple in which the presiding diety is Lord Venkateswara. There are several waterfalls on the hill. The more important of them are the Papanasam, the Akasa Ganga and the Gogarbha Thitham. The hill temple is an example of early Dravidian architecture and is one of the richest in South India.

CHENNAI CHEMBARAMBAKKAM LAKE
Chembarambakkam Lake is 27 kilometres from Chennai. It is best place for fishing and Swimming.
